How to Resurface a Cement Bird Bath

Just like any type of cement structure, birdbaths can crack over time. Cracks can vary from small fissures to large crevices. Even if the damage do not make the birdbath useless, you want to repair cracks and crevices as they occur to prevent further, irreversible damage. Instructions

    • 1

Clean your cement birdbath's surface using water and liquid dish detergent. Rinse thoroughly to ensure you remove any soap residue. Cleaning the surface helps ensure that you have a fresh surface to work with.

    • 2

Prepare a bag of concrete resurfacer according to package directions. The exact mixing directions depend on the brand you purchase. Generally, the correct mixing amount is one part of water for every seven parts of resurfacer. Mix it all together with a paddle mixer until there are no lumps remaining. The amount of resurfacer you need depends on the size of the birdbath.

    • 3

Apply your prepared resurfacer to any cracks or crevices on your birdbath. You can use your hands or a trowel to do this. If you use your hands, wear rubber gloves to protect your hands from the drying nature of concrete. Allow it to dry completely. This may take several hours to overnight, depending on the amount of resurfacer used.

    • 4

Spray down the surface of the birdbath with a hose after the original application of resurfacer has dried. Wipe away as much excess water from the surface as possible.

    • 5

Mix a second batch of resurfacer, the same way you mixed the first batch. This time you will enough to cover the entire birdbath. Apply the mixed resurfacer to the entire surface of the birdbath. Use your hands to smooth it as you go.

Use a small hand broom to sweep over the surface of the birdbath as the resurfacer dries. This will help give a textured finish to the concrete.
