Will Granite Birdbaths Crack in the Winter?

Birdbaths help birds find much-needed water and help them clean themselves. Although birdbaths are available in a variety of materials, some are more durable than others. Unlike stone birdbaths, granite birdbaths won't crack when winter temperatures make their water freeze, but you may use a couple of methods to keep their water from freezing.
  1. Warm Water

    • Birds need water, especially during cold weather. A Brooklyn Botanic Garden website article suggests adding some warm water to a birdbath throughout the day to keep its water from freezing during especially cold spells.

    Birdbath Heater

    • Placing a birdbath heater in the birdbath water keeps the water from freezing. The heater, which is a small device, is especially helpful when you are away for extended periods and during winter storms that prevent you from replenishing the birdbath with warm water.

    Maintenance

    • Granite birdbaths, like birdbaths make of other materials, require maintenance, including rinsing them with water and replenishing their water daily. Cleaning the birdbath each week helps to keep birds healthy; use one part bleach with nine parts water for cleaning, scrub debris out of the basin with a scrub brush, rinse the birdbath with clean water and refill it with water. Positioning a birdbath away from bird feeders limits contamination from rotting seeds used as bird food.
