Birds need water, especially during cold weather. A Brooklyn Botanic Garden website article suggests adding some warm water to a birdbath throughout the day to keep its water from freezing during especially cold spells.
Placing a birdbath heater in the birdbath water keeps the water from freezing. The heater, which is a small device, is especially helpful when you are away for extended periods and during winter storms that prevent you from replenishing the birdbath with warm water.
Granite birdbaths, like birdbaths make of other materials, require maintenance, including rinsing them with water and replenishing their water daily. Cleaning the birdbath each week helps to keep birds healthy; use one part bleach with nine parts water for cleaning, scrub debris out of the basin with a scrub brush, rinse the birdbath with clean water and refill it with water. Positioning a birdbath away from bird feeders limits contamination from rotting seeds used as bird food.
