How to Clean a Stone Garden Fountain

Over time, your stone garden fountain can build up dirt, minerals or algae that detracts from its appearance. Common household products are all you need to maintain your stone garden fountain. Clean your stone fountain at least every three months to keep it working properly. With the proper care and cleaning, you can keep your fountain looking its best.

  • 2 buckets
  • Dish detergent
  • Rubber gloves
  • Scrub brush or scrubbing pad
  • Calcium and lime remover
  • Old toothbrush

Instructions

      Unplug and turn off the water pump.

      Remove any stones or other items from the fountain, and place them in a bucket of hot water and 2 tbsp. of dish detergent.

      Remove the pump from the fountain according to the manufacturer's instructions, and drain the water from the fountain.

      Fill a bucket with hot water and add 2 tsp. of dish detergent. Put on rubber gloves.

      Dip a scrub brush or scrubbing pad into the bucket, and scrub the interior and exterior of the fountain thoroughly. Rinse the brush or scrubbing pad in the bucket as needed.

      Empty the bucket and rinse it out. Fill it with clean water.

      Dip a cloth into the bucket, and wipe the fountain thoroughly to remove any soap residue. Rinse the cloth in the bucket as needed. If any mineral buildup remains after cleaning, apply calcium and lime remover to a damp cloth and wipe the fountain. Rinse the fountain thoroughly to remove any cleaning solution.

      Remove the pump cover, and scrub the inside of the pump with a wet toothbrush. Use two or three drops of dish detergent and scrub it to remove residue.

      Rinse the pump and tubing thoroughly with warm water, and replace the cover.

      Set the pump into place in the fountain.

      Scrub the rocks thoroughly with a brush, or swish the rocks with your hand to loosen any debris.

      Pour the rocks onto a flat surface, and rinse them thoroughly with a garden hose to remove any soap residue.

      Place the rocks into the fountain, and fill it with water. Plug in the fountain and turn on the pump.
