Kids DIY Pagoda Bird Feeder

When you put up a pagoda-style bird feeder, you are providing song birds with food that they may not find otherwise. This is especially true during the winter months. One way to further act in a beneficial manner is to make a bird feeder with your children using recycled materials that may ordinarily end up in the garbage can, such as a plastic milk jug.

Things You'll Need

  • Gallon milk jug
  • Pen knife
  • Sandpaper, fine-grain
  • Nail
  • Washcloth
  • Twine
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Cut an empty, plastic milk jug in half, width wise, using a pen knife. Discard the top half of the milk jug. This bottom half of the milk jug will become a pagoda bird feeder.

    • 2

Sand the cut edges of the milk jug half using fine-grain sandpaper to remove any sharp or jagged edges. Use small, circular motions with the sandpaper.

    • 3

Poke a hole in the middle of each side using a nail. Position each hole so that it is 1 inch below the top edge. Sand the inside of each side where the hole was poked out to remove any jaggedness.

    • 4

Wipe off the milk jug half using a washcloth to remove any plastic material left behind from the sanding.

    • 5

Cut four pieces of twine to measure 12 inches long each. Tie a piece of twine through each hole of the milk jug half, then tie the other ends of the twine pieces together.

    • 6

Fill the milk jug pagoda bird feeder with 4 cups of bird seeds, then hang it up by the twine.
