How to Mold Tree Eyes

Among the many garden decorations are humorous tree faces. You can buy tree face sets at garden centers or online, but you can mold one-of-a-kind tree eyes yourself out of polymer craft clay. Use your imagination to make expressive eyes for the trees in your yard. Tree eyes should not be more than 3 or 4 inches across for the clay to bake correctly. Molding custom tree eyes makes a great art project for children.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Roll a small ball out of white polymer clay. Smooth the surface of the ball with your fingers. Do not leave any fingerprints in the ball. Make another small ball identical to the first one. These are the eyeballs.

    • 2

Roll a very small ball of polymer clay in a color you want the iris of the tree eyes to be. Flatten the ball into a pancake shape and press it onto one of the white eyeballs. Roll the ball between your palms to smooth the pancake onto the ball's surface. Make another identical pancake of clay and press it onto the other white eyeball, rolling it smooth as well.

    • 3

Roll an even smaller ball of black polymer clay and flatten it into a very small circle. Press it into the middle of the colored pancake you made in Step 2. This is the pupil of the tree eye. Roll the ball again between your palms to smooth it. Repeat to make a pupil for the other tree eye.

    • 4

Make a cup out of gray polymer clay just big enough to hold one of the eyeballs. Press the bottom of the cup against the table to make it flat. Make one side of the cup's rim taller than the other. This is the eye socket. Place an eyeball into the eye socket with the iris and pupil opposite the cup. At least half of the eyeball should stick out of the eye socket cup. The taller side of the eye socket will be the upper eyelid.

    • 5

Roll some black or brown polymer clay into a caterpillar shape to make an eyebrow. It should be about as long as half the circumference of the eye socket cup. Press the eyebrow onto the eye socket cup above the upper eyelid. Repeat to make a matching eyebrow for the other eye.

    • 6

Insert a loop of wire into the flat bottom of the eye socket cup for a hanger. The wire should loop toward the same side of the cup as the eyebrow, so when you hang it, the eye will be right side up. Insert an identical wire into the other eye socket cup in the same position.

    • 7

Bake your molded polymer clay tree eyes in the oven according to the directions on the package of the brand of clay you used. Let the tree eyes cool completely.

    • 8

Spray the tree eyes with an acrylic waterproof sealer spray. Follow the label directions to apply an even coat. Let the spray dry. Now your molded tree eyes are ready to hang on your favorite tree.
