How to Cast Cement Lawn Ornaments

Cement, a mixture of clay powder and limestone, requires the addition of water and aggregate ingredients, such as sand or rock -- creating concrete -- before casting into durable lawn statuary and ornaments. The simplest way for a hobbyist to cast lawn ornaments at home is to use a commercially available rubber mold in the shape you desire, although a number of artists hand-sculpt wet concrete into unique shapes. Always use personal protective equipment and a respirator mask when working with concrete; concrete contains strong alkalis that burn skin and cause internal damage if taken into the nose or lungs.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on protective equipment, such as gloves and a smock, as well as a respirator mask.

    • 2

Pour a measured amount of portland cement into the basin or wheelbarrow.

    • 3

Pour aggregate, in an amount equal to the cement, into the basin or wheelbarrow, as well as any dry pigments you are using to color your concrete. Mix the dry ingredients well using a wooden dowel.

    • 4

Continue to mix well, as you add water. Add water until the concrete is the texture of cake frosting.

    • 5

Spray the inside of your rubber mold with vegetable oil. Ensure the inside of mold is completely and evenly coated.

    • 6

Pack the mold with concrete, spooned up using the trowel. Tap and shake the mold periodically to fill all areas of the mold and to dislodge air bubbles.

    • 7

Allow the concrete to dry in the mold. Depending on the size, thickness and humidity, this can take between four and 24 hours.

    • 8

Peel the mold away from the concrete gently. Fill in any cracks or chips with additional concrete and allow to dry.

    • 9

Spray the dried lawn ornament with a thin layer of acrylic sealant for weatherproofing. Allow the piece to dry, according to the sealant manufacturer's instructions, then apply a second coat. Allow it to dry before handling the ornament.
