How to Make a Post Look Like Stone With a Wire Cage

A wooden or metal post can be transformed into a decorative stone column with the help of chicken wire, which can be used as an armature framework or wire cage. Chicken wire is inexpensive and sold by the roll at hardware stores. Small stones known as pea pebbles -- a version of pea gravel with rounded edges -- is sold by the bag at home improvement stores. Whether the post is a support for a porch or a stand-alone structure, the stone treatment will add a luxurious and attractive surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height of the post with the tape measure. Cut a length of chicken wire to the height of the post and long enough to wrap around the post three times, using the wire nippers.

    • 2

Wrap the chicken wire around the post three times and secure the wire to itself by bending the open edges of the wire.

    • 3

Mix the cement and sand together in the wheelbarrow with the trowel. Add water gradually, 1 cup at a time and mix until the cement mixture is the consistency of oatmeal.

    • 4

Put on the rubber gloves and cover a small section of the wire with the wet cement mixture.

    • 5

Press the pieces of pea gravel into the cement mixture. Continue adding cement and pea gravel until the entire post is covered with stone.
