How to Make Concrete Look Weathered

Making new concrete look weathered is a way to give ordinary concrete statues, bird baths or structures a bit of character. The process used to make new concrete appear weathered doesn't harm or damage the concrete, but it is irreversible, so be sure of your decision beforehand. Allowing the paint to dry between applications is the best way to gauge the colors as you are working, as they will appear darker when the concrete is wet.

  • Stiff brush
  • 2 or 3 shades of green paint

Instructions

    • 1

Scuff random edges of the concrete with rough grit sandpaper to simulate a worn appearance. For bird baths, scuff the edges. For statues, focus on elbows, knees, hands and ears. Brush away dust with a stiff brush.

    • 2

Select two or three earthy green craft paints to give the concrete a mossy patina color. Avoid green paints with blue overtones, as the blue hue will give the concrete an unnatural look.

    • 3

Create a diluted version of each paint by combining one teaspoon of paint with one cup of warm water in a disposable bowl. Stir the mixture thoroughly to ensure there are no solid particles. Do this for each of the green shades as well as black and brown.

    • 4

Dip a sponge into the lightest shade of the diluted green paint. Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands from the paint.

    • 5

Squeeze the tinted water over the concrete, re-wetting the sponge several times. Try to simulate the way rain water would hit the concrete in a natural setting. Allow the concrete to dry for one to two hours.

    • 6

Repeat this process for each additional color, working from the lightest to the darkest green, then the black and finishing with the brown. If any of the colors appear too dark on the concrete, rinse the concrete gently with fresh water. Allow the concrete to dry between each color.
