Use a dry brush to remove dust, wood particles, spider webs and other debris before starting. Wipe off any mud that may be present. If necessary, you can rent a power washer for heavy-duty jobs.
Scrub mold and mildew with a solution of bleach and water. Rinse well.
Sand any loose and cracking paint that is already present.
Seal cracks around doors, windows, and wherever wood comes together with caulk to prevent moisture problems. Allow it to dry fully before priming and painting.
Treat old wood on a garden shed before painting to ensure long-lasting results. Use gloves and a spirit-based wood treatment. Apply liberally.
Prime all surfaces of the garden shed prior to painting with oil-based primer. This will ensure even coverage and protection from the elements.
Choose an exterior paint that can stand up to a lot of wear. Paint made for use on porches is a good choice.
Pour paint into a 5-gallon bucket with a roller screen. Use one with a hook so you can hang it from your ladder or scaffold.
Start with the siding. Paint with the grain of the wood. Roll on the paint with a long-nap roller. Continue until the entire garden shed is painted.
Paint on a second coat after the first coat has dried.
