How to Calculate the Cost of Building a Garden Shed

Building a garden shed in your backyard provides convenient storage space and great protection for you lawn-care equipment. Plan carefully so that you don't overbuild and waste money, or underbuild and have to add on later.

Decide what type floor you want on your garden shed. Concrete is the best floor for this type of storage building, but it is also the most expensive. Your next option is doing a plywood floor. First, determine the size of garden shed you want to build. If your ground is not level, it saves money to build a plywood floor because you can level it with blocks rather than having to grade for concrete.

Look at your exterior framing walls when you calculate the cost of building a garden shed. On a garden shed, wall studs may go on 24-inch centers instead of 16-inch centers. This saves framing material dollars. Decide on the type of roof you want. A shed roof costs less to build than a gabled roof.

Make a list of materials needed once you decide on the actual size you want your garden shed to be. This is the only way to calculate cost in building. Your list must note the type of floor you want, studs for framing the walls, the type roof system (shed or gable), the type roofing (shingle or metal) and what type siding you want to use on the exterior. If you want windows, add that to your list and don't forget the door.

Take your list and the measurements for your building to a local building supply company. You must know the current price of materials in order to calculate the cost of building a garden shed.
