Types of Shed Door Hinges

Strap Hinges

• Strap hinges are the most common type of hinge used on sheds and gates. They consist of a long metal strap that extends up to a foot across the width of the door. This end of the hinge is connected to a small metal component that attached to the door frame, or to the wall at either side. Strap hinges are one of the least secure ways to hang a shed door, but are popular because of their classic look and ease of installation.

Butt Hinges

• A butt hinge is the most frequently used method of hanging a door in the home, and is also an affordable and secure way to hand a shed door. It consists of two metal leaves connected by a steel joint, or butt. Each leaf measures approximately 4 inches, and can be surface mounted or recessed into the door and frame. For doors that swing out of the shed, look for hinges with a nonremovable pin to help prevent tampering. Look for stainless steel butts to minimize rust and corrosion.

Continuous Hinges

• A continuous, or piano hinge, is a durable and long-lasting device used to hang a door. It extends down the entire length of the opening, and helps to distribute the weight of the door across the entire hinge. A continuous hinge can withstand high levels of abuse. It is a solid choice for heavy or wide doors.

Spring Hinges

• Spring hinges are traditional butt hinges with an integral spring mechanism. This mechanism will automatically close the door after it has been opened. Spring hinges can help keep your shed secure if you become distracted working in the yard. They can also help keep wildlife and pests from finding their way into your shed. If you have an automatic lock on your door, ensure the door can be opened from the inside when using a spring hinge. This will keep you from becoming trapped inside.

Concealed Hinges

• Concealed hinges, also known as SOSS or invisible hinges, are used to provide a clean look while allowing a door to swing normally. They are installed in pockets within the door and frame so that they are invisible when the door is closed, and only a small portion of the hinge is visible when the door is open. These hinges are expensive, but are long-lasting and secure because they are protected from tampering and weather-related damage.
