How to Construct a Storage Shed

Sheds can be constructed using your own plans or designs or purchasing a complete unit from a home improvement store. Building a small shed yourself will require deciding how big it is going to be and the type of wood to use for its construction. A shed can be constructed from wood, plastic and even metal. Building a small storage shed is similar to building a one room house.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the size of shed that you require and find a place in your yard where it will be located.

    • 2

Construct the floor of the shed first. Measure and cut lengths of 2x4 to construct a frame that is the same width and length of the shed.

    • 3

Cover the floor with 3/2 inch plywood using a hammer and nails. Measure and cut the plywood first or use a circular saw to trim off any excess.

    • 4

Construct the wall frames that will be used for each side of the shed. Place the studs in the frame 16 inches apart, just like a standard house frame. Measure and cut pieces of 2x4 to the correct length for each wall frame.

    • 5

Measure and frame an opening in one wall frame, preferably on an end, for a door.

    • 6

Secure the wall frames to the floor using framing nails. Make sure each wall frame is flush with the outside edge of the floor before nailing.

    • 7

Construct 3 to 4 rafters to place on top of the wall frames for the roof. Measure and cut 2x4 pieces to the correct length and then use a miter saw to cut a 45 degree angle at the end of each board. Secure the 2x4 pieces together using a hammer and framing nails.

    • 8

Place the rafter on top of front and back edge of the wall frames and secure them with framing nails. A third rafter will need to be placed in the center and secured to the wall frame as well.

    • 9

Cover the roof with pieces of plywood. Measure the dimensions of the roof to determine how much plywood will be needed.

    • 10

Cover the roof of the shed with tar paper and shingles, if needed.

    • 11

Attach plywood to the wall frames by hammering nails into the studs.
