The Disadvantages of Greenhouses

For many gardeners---especially those who live in turbulent climates---greenhouses are a solution to a beautiful garden year around. Although it takes a lot of knowledge and expertise to maintain a greenhouse, greenhouses become very rewarding to those who create, maintain and nurture the plants and flowers that grow within them. Understanding the disadvantages of greenhouses can help save lots of money and time.
  1. Work

    • The main disadvantage to greenhouses is that they are extremely difficult to setup, as well as maintain. They require constant care and attention. The proper location for the greenhouse must be chosen so as to ensure that the flowers and plants receive the correct amount of sunlight through the greenhouse. Preferably, owners will create the greenhouse over an area of soil that is fertile enough for plants to grow well in.

    Money

    • Greenhouses are fairly expensive to construct if you develop a high quality one. Glass can also add to the cost---as many greenhouses are composed primarily of glass.

Electricity costs normally rise during the winter time as well, since the majority of greenhouses require heating during the winter time. Many greenhouse keepers even install a small version of hydroponic farming---to ensure that fresh soil and water are constantly available to the plants---which can be extremely expensive to install.

    Glass

    • Although glass is one of the more traditional materials to build greenhouses out of---many gardeners don't believe in using glass due to the risk of over-exposing plants to sunlight. Glass allows direct sunlight to hit plants, which can be plentiful during the summer time. Just like humans, plants can suffer from sunburns; this can cause plants to die or not grow properly.

Glass is also extremely susceptible to dirt, meaning that owners are required to constantly clean the glass. Since plants are dependent upon sunlight, cleaning glass is a necessity to ensure that adequate amounts get through. It also becomes aesthetically displeasing when glass on a greenhouse stays dirty.

    Plastic

    • Although plastic greenhouse covering is cheaper, many people don't care for its look---as it is often considered a "cheap" look. As many greenhouses are attached to people's homes, this can create problems with neighbors, depending upon the location of your greenhouse.
