Potting Sheds & Greenhouses

Potting sheds are used for gardening tasks such as planting seedlings and sharpening tools. Greenhouses are designed for growing and protecting plants during cold weather. In some cases, the two areas may be combined or at least placed close together.
  1. Placement

    • Potting sheds and greenhouses are typically placed close to the garden. Fine Home Building recommends positioning them where they will receive maximum exposure to the sun, but far enough away from trees that falling branches are not a concern.

    Needs

    • Plans for the design should be based on your specific needs. Water access is beneficial for both potting sheds and greenhouses, according to Fine Home Building. They may include shelving, storage and workspace.

    Construction

    • Meridith Corporation indicates that potting sheds and greenhouses may be constructed of different materials such as wood, metal, hardened rubber or vinyl. The floor may be concrete or brick-paved and a greenhouse may have clear glass or solar panels.

    Size

    • The size of the structures can vary, based on the intended uses. A potting shed can be a small lean-to style that includes a simple workbench with a slanted roof. Other structures may be multi-purpose, such as a greenhouse that includes a seating area.

    Appearance/Decor

    • Greenhouses and potting sheds may be designed to fit naturally into the garden or can be a focal point, according to Meridith Corporation. A cottage-style shed might be surrounded by foliage and flowers or decorative pieces such as birdhouses or watering cans.
