The Proper Base for a Storage Shed

Sheds provide great storage space and protection for all of your outdoor gear in any season. The key to a long-standing storage shed is in the preparation of the foundation and in the selection of the materials used for the base.
  1. Preparation

    • Preparing the ground for the shed base involves accurately measuring the storage shed dimensions and excavating the ground to these dimensions, as well as to the correct depth. Using landscape fabric to line the hole will stop weeds from growing through the base.

    Traditional Materials

    • There are several materials traditionally used to make shed bases, most of which start with a layer of crushed stone in the excavated hole. Wooden bases are made of a skid of pressure treated wood on this layer. Bases made of concrete---either poured concrete or concrete slabs---also are long-lasting. In all cases, the bases should be level to correctly support the shed.

    New Material

    • Plastic squares lead to a physically lighter base. These squares are usually made from recycled plastic, often recycled wheelie bins. They also are built on a crushed rock base, and are as durable and hard-wearing as concrete bases.
