How to Create a Storage-Building Business

Starting a business to sell storage buildings works best if setup and delivery are included in the price. Few customers will be prepared to transport or assemble a building of any size. However, there are ways to make a profit by selling pre-built buildings or selling shed kits that owners can assemble. Keep in mind that rent-to-own storage buildings are available in many cities. Owners of wooden sheds apply customer monthly rental fees to ownership. This works well for young buyers or those with no credit.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain office space to start a storage building business. Use a home office, rented office space or buy a small building to put on property that is large enough for a business space. Plan to use property close to the office, wherever it is located, to display storage buildings for sale or lease.

Set up desk space. Install a computer, telephone and room for customers to review brochures. Place a table in the office to display photos of various types of buildings and a price list. Get a business license right away and have business cards printed. Don't publish the telephone number, until the city issues the business license. Wait until everything is in order before seeking real clients.

Start with four or five buildings. Sell pre-built buidlings made by a local craftsman in the beginning. Do this to gain attention from higher-income clients. Take orders for larger buildings or sheds built on-site that homeowners can paint themselves or opt to have your workers paint or stain.

Offer buildings in several price ranges. Have someone manufacture affordable buildings made of metal or particle-board products, for example. Include buildings made of tongue-and-groove planks or cedar siding. Offer a line of storage building kits to be assembled totally by the homeowner as well.

Keep overhead low. Advertise the building business via free websites or local bulletin boards in the beginning. Hire a part-time worker to deliver the buildings to clients. Create a goal to sell at least 20 buildings the first month with a $200 profit per building, for example. Strive to spend only part of this revenue for utilities, printing and insurance, so that $2,000 is made as real profit. Set the goal to sell 25 buildings the second month, and grow the business slowly to keep profits very consistent.
