Tools to Help Organize a Garden Shed

Disorganized garden sheds are not only an irritation; they can also be a safety hazard. When sharp tools and cans of gasoline share space with bags and bottles of fertilizer, herbicide and other potentially dangerous chemicals, it's vital to make a place for everything and keep everything in its place.
  1. Shelves

    • Inexpensive prefab shelving units work well for organizing power tools, small hand tools and boxes of fasteners or other small items. Shelving units are more stable when you put heavy items on the lower shelves and light items on the top shelves. You can find items on shelves more easily if you group similar items on a single shelf and don't pile items on top of each other or in front of other items.

    Wall Hooks

    • Wall hooks let you store tools with long handles safely since they won't trip you or fall over every time you open the door. Wall hooks are an extremely efficient use of space and let you clearly see each implement instead of having to dig through a tangle of rakes and shovels propped in the corner. By putting wall hooks on the inside of the door, you can make use of storage space that would otherwise be wasted.

    Storage Containers

    • Clear plastic storage containers are a safe option for storing bags of fertilizer, bottles of pesticide or herbicide and boxes of garbage bags or landscape fabric. Anything that a rodent might chew on and damage is a good candidate for storage inside a clear storage container. The containers can be stacked, which saves space; put less-used items on the bottom and often-used items on top.

    Labels

    • Labels let you find things more easily and keep everyone in the family on the same page when it comes to garden shed organization. You can label shelves by category, label storage containers by content, and label which fuel container has the 2-cycle engine oil for the string trimmer and which has plain gasoline for the lawn mower. Labels can be a simple handwritten note on a piece of masking tape or a programmable plastic label-maker.
