How to Remove a Shed

There are times when a homeowner wishes he could remove a shed, but the shed remains in the same spot year after year, because he just doesn't know how to do it. Heavy equipment rental companies specialize in renting and delivering forklifts. A forklift can easily move a shed within a day's time. The shed can be moved to a different part of the yard or loaded onto a trailer and hauled away.

Things You'll Need

  • Forklift with 8-foot forks
  • 4 wood blocks, 4 inches by 4 inches, 24 inches long
  • 2 pieces of plywood, 4 feet by 8 feet, 1 inch thick

Instructions

    • 1

Empty the shed of everything that adds weight to the structure.

    • 2

Lower the forks of the forklift to the ground. Slowly drive the forklift toward one of the four corners of the shed. Allow the tips of the forks to slide 12 inches beneath the shed corner and then stop.

    • 3

Lift the corner of the shed 6 inches off the ground and have an assistant place a wood block under the corner to keep it elevated. Lower the forks and then back out from under the shed. Repeat this process for all four corners until the shed is up off the ground resting on the blocks.

    • 4

Spread the forks on the forklift as wide as they will go. Use the hydraulic lever to spread the forks out if they are hydraulically moved or push the forks apart by hand if they are manually adjusted.

    • 5

Place two pieces of plywood over the forks. Center the boards so that they are centered on the forks from side-to-side.

    • 6

Drive the forklift toward one of the long sides of the shed. Center the forks in the middle of the shed so that the weight of the shed will be evenly balanced when lifted. Lower the forks to the ground and allow them to slide completely under the shed.

    • 7

Pull the lever that makes the forks go upward until pressure is applied beneath the shed. Pull the tilt lever to tilt the shed back toward the lift. Raise the shed up off the blocks by raising the forks again. Tilt back a little more. The shed should now be lifted off the ground and balancing on the forks.

Inspect the corners and sides of the shed to ensure that they are clear of all obstructions. Remove the wood blocks from beneath the shed corners. Move the shed to a new location or load it onto a flatbed trailer.
