Should I Buy or Build a Storage Shed?

A storage shed is a useful addition to any yard, especially if you enjoy working outdoors and have a variety of tools and equipment to store. It's equally useful if you have no garage or a small one that doesn't provide you with enough storage space. If you're planning for a shed, the first decision to make is whether you'll build it or buy it.
  1. Building a Shed

    • The chief argument for building a storage shed is that you can tailor it to exactly the specifications you desire. If you're skilled in woodworking, have a surplus of time and want the job to be precisely what you're envisioning, building a shed might be the best option for you. Prior to building, read shed-related woodworking articles in magazines and on the Internet to get ideas and plans to follow. You'll also need to consider the cost of materials and your time to determine if it is financially viable to build your own shed.

    Buying a Shed

    • Many people have busy schedules and aren't skilled at woodworking projects. If this description sounds like you, your best option may be to buy a storage shed. Shed companies offer a wide range of sheds of all shapes and sizes, so it's likely you'll be able to buy a shed that fits your needs. Sheds are sold in several colors, and even if you can't find a color that matches your home, there's always the option of painting the shed. Another option is to consider contracting a friend or family member to build the shed for you. You're still essentially buying a shed, but you'll have more control of the final look of the building.

    Customizing your Shed

    • Whether you build your own shed, have a friend build it for you or buy it, there are many ways in which you can customize it. Aesthetic customization, which entails changing the color of the siding, roof and door, may be desired. Outside the shed, you can add accents such as flower boxes below the windows and a decorative weather vane on the roof. Inside, the shed should be functional, with shelving and cupboards --- including some that can be locked --- and ample floor space to store items such as lawnmowers and tractors. Depending on the size of the shed, you may wish to have a workbench installed along the inside of one wall.

    Other Considerations

    • There's no right or wrong answer when it comes to deciding between building and buying a storage shed. When you're trying to decide, make a list of the pros and cons of each scenario to help you work toward a decision. Price out premade sheds and try to estimate the cost of the materials if you made the project yourself.
