How to Locate Your Chicken's Nest

Searching for eggs is a challenging activity that some of us do voluntarily every year in our homes to bring in Easter--although, in that case, it is a rabbit that hid them. Finding chicken eggs outdoors can be tricky even for the seasoned chicken farmer; chickens have a deeply rooted instinct to hide their eggs. Fortunately, there is a trick you can use to get the upper hand.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the hen whose nest you wish to find, in a coop or other locked area for the night. Wait until sunrise.

    • 2

Let the hen out of the coop first thing in the morning. Allow the hen to roam the yard freely. Follow the hen at a distance that will allow you to remain inconspicuous; hens know if they are being followed and will not reveal the location of their eggs.

    • 3

Follow the hen until it enters a site that appears to be a suitable nesting area. Slowly approach the area and try to peek from a distance. Watch where the hen goes, while remaining silent. The hen will approach its nest to check on the eggs.
