Directions on Building Storage for Firewood

Using firewood can save money on heating, particularly if you cut your own. However, firewood must be stored properly or dampness, rain and mud will cause it to rot or be too damp to burn. In the worst-case scenario, the wood will rot to the point of disintegration. This basic form of storage will keep your wood dry and flammable. It will work in almost any location as long as it is properly secured.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the pallets against the side of your house, shed, on the porch or under an overhang.

    • 2

Sort the wood, separating the logs from the kindling --- any logs or branches thinner than your forearm.

    • 3

Stack the logs 3-feet high evenly across the pallets. Make one layer at a time.

    • 4

Stack the logs 1-foot higher on two of the pallets. Place the kindling on the third pallet. When it is time to build your fire, it will be easier to gather both the kindling and the logs.

    • 5

Drape the tarp over the wood. Cover the top completely but leave the sides loose. Secure the rope through the loopholes and tie it to the pallet. Leaving the sides loose allows the air to continue to circulate underneath and cure the wood.
