How to Build a Chicken Box

Chickens and their eggs are staples in many societies worldwide. Proper containment is required in order to provide the protection chickens need to live and produce. Without the use of a chicken box, the chickens will be exposed to unsatisfactory elements and could potentially run wild and risk getting killed by other animals.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw out a plan. Most chicken boxes follow a similar pattern such as a rectangle box or cage-like environment.

    • 2

Select and gather your materials. The most common materials are wood, mesh wire and plastic. You will need to be sure your materials are sturdy enough to withstand any type of weather, but are also easy to clean.

    • 3

Construct a frame using wood posts and nails or screws. Create walls and a ceiling if desired. Make sure your design leaves enough space on the end of the posts to be put deep into the ground.

    • 4

Insert your frames into the ground. Secure all sides into the ground by placing the post at least a few feet down. This will ensure animals do not dig under your box or knock it down.

    • 5

Assemble doors or windows. A window or door is needed in order to access the chickens and the eggs.

    • 6

Create a ground cover. You can lay dirt or a similar protective covering on the ground inside the coop.

    • 7

Wrap mesh wire around the frames. Secure it tightly all the way around the frames to keep predators out. You can use a heavy duty stapler to attach the mesh wire.

    • 8

Attach the roof. Your roof can be a plastic roof or a handmade wood one. You will need to make sure it will keep the rain or snow out and provide cover.

    • 9

Install a light for warmth. You may need to run a cord or wires from an outdoor light or install an outdoor electrical box.

    • 10

      Place feeders and waterers inside.
