How to Decorate an Old Shed

If you have an old shed that has become an eyesore to you or is in need of decoration because of impending events, use a little DIY spirit and transform it into a retreat that everyone can appreciate. Before you start decorating, be sure to clear out the clutter and rid the shed of any unwanted vines or other impediments to making changes. Start with a fresh slate and make over the shed into a getaway you'd be proud to show your friends and family.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint your shed. Use contrasting colors for trimwork for an eye-catching look that will enhance the shed's potential. It's amazing what a coat of paint can do, so go to it.

    • 2

Visit an architectural salvage yard or a local auction for items you can incorporate into your shed, such as a new window or decorative brackets that can be used to make shelving. Choose a vintage light fixture as an easy way to bring character into your shed with a small investment.

    • 3

Set up a cot in your shed and outfit it with old quilts for a comfy, welcoming look. You can use the space underneath the cot for camouflaged storage.

    • 4

Install a window box as a traditional way to decorate a shed without a huge investment. You can buy a premade window box at many discount home goods stores.

    • 5

Install lattice work on the sides or across the porch of your shed and plant either fast-growing vines or other plants that will make it easier to cover any flaws in your shed's design that can't be hidden by paint. Ivy, Confederate vine or Morning Glory can make a real difference in your shed's appearance.

    • 6

Use white lights to add instant pizazz to your shed. The warm glow put off by the lights help make it more attractive and homey at night.

    • 7

Replace the shed's windows with older decorative pieces such as old stained-glass windows. These are available at garage sales, auctions, and through architectural salvage dealers.
