What Is a Good Size Shed?

Sheds are available in a wide variety of sizes and styles. There is no specific answer as to what a good sized shed is. Your shed should be large enough for its intended purpose, small enough for your yard space and roomy enough for your future needs. Ask yourself a few key questions to determine what size shed is right for your particular needs.
  1. What Will I Use the Shed For?

    • The purpose of you shed will help to determine the right size. Are you planning a storage shed, gardening shed, woodworking shed, potting shed or pool shed? When determining the size of a storage shed, gather at all of the items you would like to store and place them together in your yard. Measure the perimeter around the space they are occupying to get a starting point. Add 1 to 2 feet to each side to allow for ample walking space in your shed. Take into consideration that some items can be hung on the walls or stored on shelves. If you are planning a pool shed, plan your shed large enough to store pool equipment, chemicals, supplies and pool toys and rafts. For a gardening, woodworking or potting shed, allow for ample space for your workbench, equipment and supplies.

    How Big Is My Yard?

    • The size of your yard will help you to determine the right size shed. The size of your shed should not interfere with your outdoor living space. Select an out-of-the-way location near the far edge or perimeter of your yard for a storage shed. You may want to place your gardening or woodworking shed in a location with easy accessibility. If you have limited space, a lean-to shed may be the right size for you. Lean-to sheds are mounted against an existing structure such as a garage.

    What is My Budget?

    • Your budget will be a determining factor in the right size shed. Larger sheds often cost more than smaller ones. If your budget is limited, you may choose a larger pre-made model rather than a custom designed smaller shed. Select the largest shed possible that is able to handle your current and future needs and also stay within your budget.

    What Are The Zoning Requirements?

    • Your local zoning board may dictate the size of shed you are allowed to place on your property. Housing and condominium associations often have guidelines regarding shed sizes. Consult with your local authority regarding shed size restrictions before purchasing your shed. You may also need to request a building permit when installing your shed.
