How to Build a Sturdy Shed Door

A flimsily-constructed shed door won't last five minutes if you live in an area that regularly experiences extreme weather conditions. Unfortunately though, many of the shed doors available from hardware stores can be made out of fairly thin plywood. If you want a shed door that's going to stand the test of time and repel bad weather and intruders, you'll be best off building it yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height and width of the door frame you plan to fit your new door into.

    • 2

Purchase an adequate number of wooden boards to construct your door plus 10 percent extra for wastage. Your boards should be around 20 to 25 mm thick and 125 mm wide. You'll also need a couple of lengths of hardwood.

    • 3

Mark and cut your boards to size so as you have enough to lay them side by side to create your door.

    • 4

Prime and paint your boards before constructing your door if desired.

    • 5

Cut your hardwood into three pieces that are equal to the width of your door minus the width of any beading in your door frame and an additional 5 mm on either side.

    • 6

Position your hardwood across your wooden boards at the top, middle and bottom of your door and nail them into place.

    • 7

Screw hinges onto your door and your door frame and install any other door furniture such as handles or locks as required.

    • 8

Hang your new door on its hinges.
