How to Build a Shed With Siding Materials

Constructing a shed requires only basic carpentry skills and tools. Building an appropriate framework is the biggest challenge, because siding is not difficult to install. Select a space on your property that will work well for years to come, because you will need a permanent concrete slab. Define all of the shed dimensions carefully, so the framework shape yields a pleasing overall shape and design. You can use new or recycled siding materials to cover the shed. Be sure to invest time in painting and details, so it enhances your backyard landscape.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the space you will use for the shed. Draw the shed dimensions on graph paper, using a roof slope of at least 30 degrees.

    • 2

Sketch all details of shed framing. Draw a bottom plate, wall studs, window and door openings, and a top plate for all four sides. Sketch wall studs on 16-inch centers standing vertically around the building. Plan the roof with rafters on 16-inch centers constructed of 2-by-6-inch boards. Use thicker rafter boards, so you can install insulation to make the building more snug, especially if you will do woodworking on cold days.

    • 3

Use 2-by-6-inch boards to build the perimeter box for the slab concrete pour. Nail the boards together in a rectangular fashion, but drive 10-inch stakes on the outside of the box to hold the boards in place. Roll metal grid in the bottom of the slab area. Pour the concrete and trowel to a smooth finish. Allow to dry a couple of days before building the shed.

    • 4

Secure the bottom plate of framing to the concrete with bolts. Cut 2-by-4 boards for the walls and roof rafters that are 2-by-6 to build the shed framing. Use 4-inch screws driven by an electric screwdriver to hold the structure together. Use screws versus nails to make sure the building will hold up to strong winds. Leave room for windows and doors in the framework, but select the windows you will install before you build the openings. Build a door framework for the main shed door from 2-by-4 boards.

    • 5

Add 1/2-inch plywood to the roof rafters and install asphalt shingles. Install exterior wood paneling sheets to the shed, using a screwdriver. Use tongue-and-groove siding as another option. Buy high-quality paint or stain to seal the siding, especially if you will use any recycled materials. Brush on a protective coat of porch and deck paint as another excellent option. Trim the shed in a contrasting color to add visual appeal.

Add final touches. Install windows and caulk edges. Staple up insulation overhead between interior rafters. Cover the insulation with 1/4-inch plywood sheets. Insulate walls, too, if you desire, and cover them with recycled plywood or paneling. Paint the interior white for maximum light. Cover the door framework with siding and install with two sets of heavy-duty door hinges.
