How to Plant a Fruit Tree From Seed

Most of today's fruit trees are grafted rather than grown from seed because it's a more effective way to predict the quality of the fruit. But that doesn't mean you can't grow a fruit tree from seed. If you're feeling adventurous, give it a try-you might like the results.

Instructions

    • 1

Stratify the seeds for 3 to 4 months. Wrap them in moist peat moss or vermiculite and put everything in a plastic baggie. Put the baggie in the refrigerator and wait.

    • 2

Transfer the seeds to flats and add more peat moss or vermiculite. Cover and leave in a warm and dimly lit area. Poke holes in the cover so air can circulate.

    • 3

Allow the seeds to germinate. This can take a long time depending on the plant and its location. Be patient and watch for any signs of growth.

    • 4

Move the seeds to a well-lit area once they germinate. Keep your new fruit trees indoors and away from the harsh conditions until they are hardy enough to handle it.

    • 5

Transplant the fruit trees when they're ready. You may have to repeat this step many times depending on how large your fruit tree grows.
