How to Grow Cleome

Cleome, or spider flower, is one of the easier flowers to grow, and at 4 to 6 feet tall, it is quite a showstopper. Cleome is fairly drought resistant and makes an ideal choice for areas not easily watered. Although cleome is an annual, it often reseeds itself, making it grow year after year in the same location.

Instructions

    • 1

Acquire cleome seeds. Avoid the hybrids if you would like to take advantage of their natural re-seeding nature.

    • 2

Start cleome seeds indoors four weeks before the last expected frost. Use a seed starting pot.

    • 3

Plant cleome outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Cleome is cold resistant so temperatures need not be warm, just above frost danger.

    • 4

Plant in groups for a hedgelike appearance or amongst shrubbery and other non-flowering plants for a splash of color.

    • 5

Plant cleome seedlings where they will be protected from high winds blowing them over, due to their long stalks.
