When you bought your house your grass was green, thick, full and cut perfectly. Looking around now you find yourself wondering what happened? How did the previous owner do that? Here are the basic things any home owner needs to know to keep their grass looking healthy and attractive all year round.

      Understanding Your Grass

      There are many factors you need to consider when trying to get your lawn looking healthy. Your lawn is made up of thousands and thousands small plants commonly called grass. Each plant is like any other plant you may have in your house or yard, it requires certain things in order to thrive and be healthy.

      Reseeding

      The yearly routine you should try to follow is to reseed your lawn in the early fall using a spreader so that it evenly distributed. This will help your lawn get thicker which translates into less weeds and better insect control. You should also buy grass patch seeds to help with specific spots on your hard that are having trouble growing anything. Make your new seeds get plenty of sun and water and you should see some signs of life in a few weeks.

      Fertilizing

      Plants require many nutrients to thrive and they get these from water, air and soil. Depending on your environment, your soil may not be providing what it needs in addition, if it is not getting enough sun or water, it may be struggling to be healthy. Adding fertilizer to your lawn in the late fall helps your seeds and existing lawn grow in healthy and fuller and is highly recommended.

      Weed Control

      To stop weeds from controlling your yard, you should apply a pre emergent in the early spring. This will stop weed growth before they get started and allow your grass a chance to expand. Weeds tend to be the stronger and more dominant than your grass, once they get a foothold in your yard, they will expand choke out your grass.

      Mowing

      Everything thinks they know how to mow but really what they know is how to push a lawn mower. That is not proper mowing. A homeowner can ruin there grass by cutting their grass to short or mowing at the wrong time. If cut short, your grass will have its roots exposed to the sun which would burn them up. Also, if you are having drought conditions or not able to water on a regular basis, you should not cut your lawn short as it will start new growth which requires more water that it would not get.
