How to Grow a Peach Tree from Seed

You can grow a peach tree from a seed or pit, though it's likely the peaches that come from this seed will not greatly resemble the original fruit. This is because most fruit trees have a different type of rootstock grafted onto them and the seed will revert to the original stock. You may need to try starting several different varieties of peach pits, as not all peach pits will germinate. With some experimentation and a little luck, however, you can grow a peach tree from a seed.

Research your area to make sure it is suitable to grow peaches. To grow a peach tree, you must be in the right climate zone. Different varieties of peaches thrive from zones 5 to 9. If your peach and peach pit come from a local farmer, there's a good chance it's suitable for your area.

Gather your pits. Sample peaches from the trees of friends and family, or local farmer's markets. If you find a particularly tasty peach, save the seed for growing your own tree. Store the pits in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.

Directly sow your peach pits into the ground in the fall in an area free from grass and weeds. Plant them 4 inches deep and plant them in a row. Mark the location of your row. Mulch the area. In the spring, watch for sprouting and water during dry spells.
