How to Preserve Fresh Pumpkin Seeds to Plant Next Year

There is no question about it, kids love growing pumpkins. Maybe it's the big smiling faces on jack-o-lanterns that create the appeal or maybe it just that one small seed produces a massive plant that seems to creep across the garden, engulfing everything in sight. Whatever the reason for the appeal of pumpkins, saving the seeds to plant again next year is a great way to guarantee an abundance of pumpkins each year.

Instructions

Cut mature pumpkins open and remove the seeds. Saving seeds while making jack-o-lanterns can be a lot of fun for kids. Give them a bowl to put the seeds in and challenge them to remove as much of the orange pulp as possible.

Rinse seeds in a bowl of water to remove any remaining residue and pulp. Use a soft brush, if necessary, to scrub them clean.

    • 3

Spread the seeds out on old newspaper or paper towels and allow to dry for several days to up to two weeks, in a well ventilated area. Check the seeds daily for any signs of mold and turn to dry both sides evenly. Drying time varies according to temperature, humidity level and the size of the seeds.

Store dried seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dry, place for the winter. Mark the container, as it is easy to confuse pumpkin seeds with melon or squash seeds.

Plant in the spring after the danger of frost has passed in your area.
