There are two kinds of lima beans, pole lima beans and bush lima beans. The most popular of the two are the bush limas. Lima beans grows best in full sunlight. Plant sees approximately 2 inches below the soil. Sow seeds 4 inches apart. Germination occurs 10 to 12 days after planting. Do not over water at this time, because too much water will cause seeds to rot.
Plants need plenty of water. Ground show be moist but not soggy. Mulch the soil around the plants, this will help conserve moisture. You can fertilize, but not too much. Too much fertilizer may cause excessive leaf growth, and this in return will delay pod formation.
To tell if the lima beans are ready to be picke, squeeze the edges of the pod between your fore finger and thumb. If they are mature and ready they will spring open a little. The pods should feel plump. It takes time for lima beans to swell inside of the pod.
Cook and enjoy your lima beans.
