Ginseng Stratification Process

• For a more productive ginseng seedbed, fresh seeds need to be stratified and then stored in a container. This process involves storing them in a cool spot, such as a basement area with a wet cloth on top. Stir the seeds every day or alternate pouring them back between two containers for ventilation. It is important to have the seedbeds well-prepared in anticipation of the planting. The seeds can be stored in a refrigerator for several days before planting them. It can, however, postpone the germination process. For the stratification process, small amounts of the ginseng seeds can be stored in a bag that is constructed from screen and wire. For larger amounts, put them in an 8-by-12 inch wooden box that has a screen on the bottom and the top. Make sure it can be drained and will keep bugs and rodents away. Alternate the layers of seed and damp sand. Bury the bag in 4 to 5 inches of soil and cover with mulch. Bury the box several inches in the ground.

How to Plant Ginseng Seeds

• The ginseng seeds typically do not evolve until the second spring. The ginseng seeds should be planted ¼ to ½ inch deep in the soil. The seeds should have 1 to 6 inches of space between each one. The rows should be distanced by 6 to 9 inches. To preserve the moisture in the soil during the winter, up to 2 inches of mulch needs to be put on the ginseng seedbeds. There are around 8,000 seeds in each lb. of seed.

• When planting time arrives, the seeds should be checked to ensure they have a soft texture and have not attracted mold. Planting the seeds in the fall before freezing temperatures arrive is the most suitable period. They can begin germinating in March.
