How to Plant Seeds From Hybrid Corn

Hybrid corn is a cross between corn and another plant. It could be another type of corn or another plant species. The planting process is the same, however, as with ordinary corn seed. With the proper techniques and soil, you can grow your own hybrid corn.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine what kind of hybrid corn you are using. If there is sweet corn in it, you will need soil rich in nitrogen and moisture. You can create this type of soil by applying organic fertilizer or compost.

    • 2

Wait until the temperature rises to about 50 degrees. The corn cannot germinate in colder weather.

    • 3

Insert the seeds into the ground about a foot from one another. You will want to plant the seeds in short rows. In other words, don't create a row of nine plants--create three rows of three plants. This will help the corn plants pollinate.

    • 4

Water the plants once you have finished the planting process.

    • 5

Water the plants frequently. Because of the energy required to grow the corn stalk, an ample amount of water is needed. Water the plants every morning except on days when rain is expected.

    • 6

Add fertilizer once the plant reaches a foot in height.

    • 7

Remove weeds from around the corn stalk and continue the watering process. Once the corn stalk develops ears, followed by silk, wait three weeks and the corn should be ready to be picked.
