How to Make a Garden Seed Mat

Garden seed mats are easy and inexpensive to make yourself. Because you select and space the seeds according to the recommendations on the seed package, you don't have to thin the plants later to make enough room for them to grow and, therefore, you don't waste plants. Seed mats are also a quicker way to start plants than by planting individual seeds, and you'll end up with a much more uniform-looking garden.

Instructions

    • 1

Test your paper napkin to make sure it will break down quickly in the soil. Wet a corner with water, and if it tears easily with your fingers, it will make a perfect seed mat.

    • 2

Mark seed placement with a marker, placing a dot where you want each seed, following the spacing directions on the seed packet. Be sure to protect your work surface, because the ink may bleed through.

    • 3

Label your napkin with the names of the seeds you plan to put on it, especially if you plan to grow several different varieties.

    • 4

Place a glue dot on each mark.

    • 5

Sprinkle a few seeds onto a dry surface, spreading them out slightly.

    • 6

Dampen the toothpick with a little water and use it to pick up a seed, placing one seed on each glue spot.

    • 7

Lay your seed mat out to dry.

    • 8

After your seed mat has dried, store it until you are ready to plant it in your garden.
