Homemade Seed Planter

Seed planters can save a lot of work by furrowing, planting and covering seeds. They also mark the next row and do it all in one round. Modern-day seed planters have different seeding plates designed for specific vegetables such as peas, beans, corn, carrots, beets and radishes (see Reference 1). There is a simple way to make a seed planter at home. This is often referred to as a poor man’s planter (see Reference 3).
  1. Homemade Seed Planter

    • Take a piece of 1-inch PVC pipe that is 6 to 12 inches longer than an average walking cane. Cut one end of the pipe at an angle as this helps with the seeding process. Take an empty soda bottle and cut about 3 inches off from the bottom. Now align the pouring spout with the straight end of the pipe and wrap tightly with strong tape such as duct tape. The seed planter is now ready for use.

To use, place the tip into the ground and push the dirt to indent the ground a little and drop as many seeds as required into the bottle. The seeds will be carried through the pipe straight into the indentation. Move the pipe a little, and, using your foot, move the removed soil back onto the indentation containing the seed. Repeat at the next spot.

The homemade seed planter usually takes a little getting used to before speed is developed. It is much faster and easier than the traditional stooping and planting methods with shovels or spades. This planter makes it very convenient to hold seed in the other hand and sprinkle the desired amount into every new indentation in the ground. This saves time by eliminating the reaching into containers and bags each time (see Reference 2).
