Buy fresh grapefruit of the variety to be grown.
Cut the grapefruit open and use the tip of a knife to gently pop the seeds out of the fruit.
Select the largest or fattest seeds and wash off the grapefruit's citric acid. Dry the seeds gently, then leave the seeds out for a full day to dry completely.
Add sterile potting medium to small starter pots and plant one grapefruit seed per pot, approximately 1/2 inch deep.
Water the starter pots and place them in a warm indoor location out of direct sunlight.
Transplant the grapefruit tree when needed and place the potted tree in a light, warm place inside the home. Keep the tree out of direct, afternoon sunlight.
Maintain the grapefruit tree as a house plant by increasing the pot size very slowly, which keeps the tree size smaller and the roots healthier as smaller pots lessen the danger of over-watering and resulting root rot.
