How to Make a Planter for Seeds With Recycled Paper

Recycling paper to make homemade seed planters prevents waste and conserves natural resources, helping the environment. Because paper is biodegradable, you can plant your homemade planter in the ground along with your sprouted seed, making gardening easy even for kids. For a simple, no-frills newspaper planter, wrap a piece of newspaper around a soda can to form a cylinder, then fold in the sides and bottom to create a basic pot shape. For a sturdier, more involved project, use old newspaper to create paper pulp for forming a container.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the newspaper into half-inch to one-inch strips. You'll need two full newspaper pages for each pot.

    • 2

Combine one part newspaper strips and two parts water in a bucket. Let the mixture sit overnight. The paper will absorb the water and break down into pulpy fibers.

    • 3

Mold the newspaper pulp around the inside of a plastic cup, squeezing out as much water as you can. The layer of paper should be one quarter to one half inch thick.

    • 4

Let the recycled planter dry for three days before removing it from the plastic cup.

    • 5

Fill the recycled paper planters with soil and sprout seeds in them. You can place the entire planter directly into the ground once the seeds have sprouted.
