Papaya seeds can be obtained from the papaya fruit sold in supermarkets. Once the papaya is ripened, slice open to remove the seeds, and plant the seeds in a pot or container with potting soil. Water the soil and place the potted seeds in an area that receives a lot of sunshine.
Given that the papaya is mainly grown in tropical regions around the world, finding a warm spot for planting is ideal. Ideally the papaya tree or seeds should be planted in an area where there is both a good amount of sunshine and/or reflected heat.
In the winter time, the papaya plant should be watered sparingly to avoid root rot. In the summer and warmer months, the papaya can be watered heavily.
The ideal soil to use for the papaya should be highly permeable. Papaya trees need a lot of water, but poor drainage will cause the roots to rot.
The papaya can withstand mild cold fronts, but should be covered or moved to a warm area in the event of freezing. Fertilizers that are nitrogen-rich can be used moderately, but are not necessary for the papaya.
