How to Make an Avocado Seed Become a Tree

Avocados are a delicious fruit used in guacamole, many delectable salads and other delicious recipes. Although it can take ten years for an avocado tree to bear fruit, they make a stately addition to any warmer region landscape. With proper care and adequate time, an avocado tree can grow up to eighty feet tall in suitable climates. Avocado trees can be grown from the pit (seed) of the avocado fruit by sprouting the seed in water and then transferring it to a pot. They can thrive under proper conditions in USDA hardiness zones 9, 10 and 11.

Instructions

    • 1

Peel the avocado and remove the pit from the center.

    • 2

Insert three toothpicks into the center of the pit. Evenly space them in a circle around the middle.

    • 3

Fill a small cup with water. Rest the toothpicks on the rim of the cup so that the wider bottom of the pit is submerged, and the pointy top is suspended above the water.

    • 4

Set the cup on a windowsill or anywhere it will get lots of sun. Change the water every few days. Once the seed has sprouted its roots, plant it in a pot with soil. Set the flower pot in a sunny place outside.
