DIY Plant Stand Lights

Nurture that flat of seeds on your plant stand by constructing your own light system. There is no need to spend money on expensive "grow lights," or full spectrum light bulbs. Simple, 48-inch fluorescent tubes, such as an inexpensive shop light, will do the job well. Two such bulbs affixed from the ceiling will provide enough light to nurture two flats of plants.

Things You'll Need

  • Plant stand
  • Plants
  • Two 48-inch fluorescent light tubes
  • 6 medium ceiling hooks
  • 12 wall hooks
  • 4 small metal chains
  • 2 extension cords
  • Power outlet

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a spot for your plant stand where you will feel comfortable hanging bulbs from the ceiling. You won't want it in a central location where objects or people could bump into the lights. Place the stand against a wall or in a corner near a power outlet.

    • 2

Screw two ceiling hooks into the ceiling spaced about six inches apart.

    • 3

Plug in two extension cords and run them up the wall and through the ceiling hooks until they hang about six inches above the tops of your plants.

    • 4

Secure the extension cords to your wall to get them out of the way, using wall hooks pushed or screwed into the wall.

    • 5

Hang the two fluorescent tubes using the four chains hooked into the tubes. Hold the chains up to the ceiling to determine where to screw in the four remaining ceiling hooks. Make a mark with a pencil or measure the correct distance between the chains.

    • 6

Screw in the four ceiling hooks according to your measurements, and hang the chains and the light fixtures from the hooks.
