Instructions

    • 1

Visit a local garden center approximately one week before you plan on planting your potatoes.

    • 2

Select and purchase certified Irish Cobbler seed potatoes. Certified seed potatoes have been inspected for diseases commonly found in potatoes. Never use potatoes from the grocery store or a friend's garden.

    • 3

Cut any large seed potatoes into smaller pieces with a paring knife. Be sure each piece has an eye, the part that allows new growth to come from the potato. Approximately 1 1/2- to 2-ounce pieces or whole potatoes are an ideal size.

    • 4

Place the cut seed potatoes on a cool dark shelf for around one week. This will allow the potatoes to heal over the cut portions, a process is called suberization. You can now plant your seed potatoes in your prepared plot.
