How to Grow a Potato Without Soil

Unlike many plants, a potato plant doesn't need soil to grow. You can grow it in a simple glass of water, which makes it ideal for a lush houseplant. Its easy-to-start nature also makes it popular for school science experiments to show children how a plant takes root. In just a couple of weeks, you can turn a regular potato into a green, vigorous vine and bring a touch of the outdoors into your kitchen, living room or classroom.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a glass or jar with an opening that has a diameter slightly larger than the widest section of your potato.

    • 2

Orient the potato in a vertical fashion with its narrowest end pointing downward.

    • 3

Insert four toothpicks, 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep, around the middle of the potato in a cross-shaped formation.

    • 4

Place the potato in the mouth of the jar or glass so the potato is supported by the toothpicks resting on the rim of the jar.

    • 5

Fill the jar or glass with fresh water until half of the potato is submerged.

    • 6

Put the jar or glass on a sunny windowsill. Roots and sprouts typically begin to emerge within 10 days.
