How to Plant Cherry Pit Seeds

Growing fruit trees from seeds can be a difficult and time-consuming task, as seeds often take a long time to germinate and mature into fruit-bearing plants. In the case of cherry seeds, they typically require a cold season to trigger their germination. You can speed up this process by chilling the seeds in your refrigerator. Patience will reward you, however, as the seedlings grow and within a few years you can be enjoying fresh cherries that you nurtured from scratch.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove several pits from fresh cherries and wrap them in moistened peat moss. Place the peat moss in a plastic sandwich bag and store in the refrigerator for six to eight weeks.

    • 2

Plant the pits in fresh soil outside or inside in a small pot. When planting outside, the seeds may take another cold season to germinate, but indoors you should find sprouts within several weeks.

    • 3

Water regularly and transfer to larger pots as the tree grows indoors. If you planted your seeds outdoors, let them grow naturally. Keep in mind that it may take up to 10 years for the tree to reach maturity and produce fruit.
