Gourds are a vine crop that have been grown for centuries for a variety of uses. Many consumers pick them up at the grocery store in the fall and use them for decorations. Years ago, Native Americans grew gourds and dried them for more useful purposes, such as cooking utensils or containers. No matter what the reason for growing gourds, it can be challenging to get the seeds to germinate as they are protected by a strong outer coat. To help the speeds germinate, nick the gourd seeds before planting.
