How to Plant Indian Corn

You can plant rows of Indian corn in a home garden early in the growing season. After the last frost of the spring, the ground warms and softens enough to accept early seeds. The long growing season necessary for Indian corn requires that it gets into the ground as early as possible. Indian corn can be used for a wide variety of edible and decorative purposes once it is ready to harvest in the fall.

Instructions

    • 1

Break up the top four inches of soil in a full sun area of the garden. Create at least two rows with each separated by a 3-foot wide and 6-inch deep trough. Spray the rows of loose dirt with water until the top 2 inches feel damp.

    • 2

Cover the damp rows of soil with black plastic landscape sheeting. Smooth out the sheeting so it makes contact with the soil as much as possible. Put large stones on top of the sheeting to keep it in place.

    • 3

Poke holes into the black plastic with your index finger every 15 inches along the length of each row. Press your finger into the soil until the second knuckle is submerged in the earth. Drop two Indian corn kernels into the indentation.

    • 4

Spray the seedlings with water twice a week until they reach 12 inches in height. Peel back the black plastic sheeting slowly to avoid damaging the young Indian corn plants. Fertilize the corn once each month with a standard garden fertilizer according to the directions of the manufacturer.

    • 5

Harvest the corn when the stalks and husks are turning brown. Peel back or remove to allow the kernels to finish drying. Save kernels to replant the following spring.
