Alfalfa Seed Types

Farms across the U.S. grow alfalfa to use as a hay to feed cattle and other livestock. This common forage crop provides livestock the nutrition they need to grow and thrive. U.S. seed companies offer many varieties of alfalfa. Farmers and scientists have worked hard to develop healthy and hearty alfalfa strains that will withstand climate and temperature changes.
  1. Action

    • The alfalfa seed known as the Action Alfalfa grows in the Midwest. Recommended by the Ohio State University, these seeds will grow in cold climates. Action alfalfa is resistant to diseases that normally destroy alfalfa crops, including anthracnose, bacterial wilt and phytophora root rot.

    Affinity

    • The Affinity alfalfa seed is a winter hardy crop that grows well in all sections, except the South, according to the Baily seed website. Affinity can resist root rot and grow in a very cold climate. If cut this variety very close to the ground, it will grow back. Affinity is resistant to a wide variety of insect pests that normally give other alfalfa seeds issues.

    Big Wheel

    • Bigwheel is hearty and will withstand a lot traffic across the field by workers and tractors. It is one of the most resistant alfalfa plants, able to fight off various diseases and insects. This variety will grow back quickly after being harvested and is suitable for planting all over the U.S.
