How to Germinate Imagination Verbena

Imagination is a hybrid cultivar of moss verbena (Verbena tenuisecta), a South American flowering plant that has become naturalized in warm areas in the southern United States. Moss verbenas spread 5 feet wide close to the surface, growing no more than 1 foot tall. They begin to bloom during their first growing season, with Imagination producing purple flowers spring through fall. Verbena seeds require darkness to germinate. Sow them indoors 10 weeks before the last spring frost.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a flat with seed-starter mix, leaving 1/4 inch of space between the surface and the flat's rim. Water the soil evenly until excess flows out of the drainage holes.

    • 2

Push the verbena seeds 1/8 inch into the seed-starter mix. Cover them with a thin layer of vermiculite.

    • 3

Apply more water to the seed-starter mix with a spray bottle to moisten the seeds and vermiculite. Check the mix regularly and irrigate it any time the surface begins to dry.

    • 4

Insert the flat inside a clear plastic bag. Close it to keep the environment warm and humid for the seeds.

    • 5

Place the seeds in a dark room and maintain the temperature at 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Germination occurs in 15 to 20 days.
