How To Plant Regar Brome

Regar brome is a cold hardy pasture grass that is used for forage and as wild life habitat. The grass spreads by rhizomes and is a drought tolerant strong growing species. Regar brome is commonly called meadow bromegrass which is quick to re-establish after harvest but is only productive for two years. Bromegrass can be grown on almost any soil type except hard pan clay. Regar brome is considered a bunch grass which only needs 14 inches of water annually. Bromegrass greens early and stays green until fall. It produces seed heads that are 24 to 48 inches high.

Instructions

    • 1

Perform a soil test on the seedbed. Regar brome grows best on slightly alkaline soils. If the soil test reveals the soil is acidic incorporate lime to sweeten the soil. Lime will increase the pH which lowers the acidity. Add it at the rate recommended on the bag for the area you are treating.

    • 2

Till the soil just before planting to remove weeds. Add 20 to 30 lbs. of nitrogen fertilizer per 100 square feet and till it into the soil. Rake the area to be seeded to remove the uprooted weeds, roots, rocks and other debris. You may plant at any time but cool-season grasses germinate best in late summer or early fall. Set up a sprinkler and water the area for 15 minutes to compact the soil.

    • 3

Fill the broadcast seeder with regar brome seed. Walk in a straight line up and down rows strewing the seed as you go. Walk and seed in the alternate direction to ensure coverage. Application rate is 20 lbs. per 100 square feet.

Scatter a light covering of sand either manually or by loading it into a wheeled fertilizer and walking the unit across the seeded area. The sand will prevent the seed from blowing away in the wind. Fertilize regar brome once annually each July with a balanced fertilizer. Use the amount indicated in the package instructions.

Allow grazing to a level of 4 inches or mow the grass very high during the cooler growing season. The grass will go dormant in very hot summers and should be mowed low to reduce fire hazards and allow the new grass to come up in fall.
