How to Plant Dutch Clover

Planting a mix of Dutch white clover and grass seed makes your lawn more ecologically sustainable. Dutch clover shades the roots of the grass, helping it get established. Dutch clover's ability to fix nitrogen provides food for both plants. Dutch clover's deep roots bring up nutrients and moisture from deep within the soil. The best time to plant Dutch clover is in early spring. Use 1 part Dutch clover seed with 15 parts grass seed.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the area to be seeded by covering it with a 2- to 3-inch layer of sand. Rake the area smooth. Sand facilitates drainage and helps prevent fungal diseases.

    • 2

Plant Dutch clover seeds and grass seeds separately. Dutch clover seeds are smaller than grass seeds. They tend to settle out of a mixture, causing clumping and a non-uniform distribution.

    • 3

Mix Dutch clover seeds with inoculant before planting. Inoculant is a rhizobia bacterium that helps legumes fix nitrogen. Read the instructions on the inoculant packet.

    • 4

Fill the spreader with seeds and broadcast them over the lawn area.

    • 5

Water the area deeply, making sure the seeds are soaked.
